About this map

Runstenar is part of YSS for Viking Studies, the Young Scholars Society, a community for young people who want to engage with the Viking Age and Old Norse literature and mythology.

This is an interactive 3D map of Viking Age Sweden. It shows the runestones I visited as fieldwork for my research on the roles and status of women in Viking Age society. Many of these stones name women: as the people who commissioned them, as heirs, as the people they remember, and in one case as the woman who made the stone.

Each stone is pinned to its real-life location on a 2D map of Sweden. Open any stone to turn it around in 3D and read its full inscription, in runes and in transliteration, with an English translation and a description of what it records and why it is significant. Each stone also lists its exact coordinates, its approximate dating and the rune row it is carved in.

The map is for members of the Young Scholars Society who can't travel to every site, so they can still see the stones as if they were standing in front of them. It's also meant for anyone curious about the Viking Age: these monuments belong to everyone, not only to people who study them in academic circles.
